Surrounded by lush golf courses, the meandering Fife Coastal Path, the expansive North Sea, and a wide open sky with staggering sunsets, The Cottage offers a cosy place to enjoy yourself. The two-bedroom duplex has four single beds (two combine for a super king), 1.5 baths, and an open-plan ground floor with private outdoor spaces to the front and rear. The interior is modern construction yet the exterior is the original Craighead Farmhouse of native sandstone, complemented by an original stone wall.

The Crail Golfing Society‘s two golf courses — Balcomie Links to the front of The Cottage and Craighead Links to the rear — provide a green canvas for the spectacular views. Sea views abound, and guests are steps away from Balcomie Sands beach and the Fife Coastal Path. In the morning, you’ll see fishing boats doing their rounds out front and a few minutes’ walk to Fife Ness will place you to spot dolphins and seals by the rocks.

The Farmhouse runs over Danes Dike, a stone wall built by Danish invaders — part of it still stands along the gravel road behind The Cottage; it used to extend all the way to Constantine’s Cave, a heritage site across the road next to Balcomie Sands. A plaque at the Cave says King Constantine I of Scotland died there after a fierce battle against Vikings, though this has been refuted by some. The Craighead area, at one time, was the most prosperous Viking port in Southeastern Scotland.

St. Andrews is only 10 miles away, and the East Neuk’s charming fishing villages ~ Anstruther, Pittenweem, St. Monans, and Elie ~ lie just south of Crail and are perfect for wandering, grabbing a treat (ice cream, fish ‘n chips, scone and tea, coffee, dram), shopping, gallery viewing, and enjoying a change of scenery for fun and relaxation. The 95 bus runs from St. Andrews to Leven.
